Home built before 2000? You may have no safety switches
The NSW Government says properties built during or after 2000 usually have safety switches installed. Older homes often don't.

Dann's Electrical repairs and upgrades switchboards across Penrith, Western Sydney, the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury. Repairs fix faults like a breaker that won't reset or a failed safety switch, 24/7 if it's urgent. An upgrade replaces an old fuse board with modern breakers and safety switches, and is worth doing if your board has ceramic fuses or no room for an EV charger or air con. New boards come with a 25-year warranty.
Your switchboard decides how safe your wiring is and how much your home can run at once. Older boards with ceramic fuses and no safety switches weren't built for air con, induction cooktops, EV chargers and today's appliances.
We replace old boards with modern circuit breakers and safety switches, check the earthing and wiring as we go, and lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work when it's done. Switchboards we install carry a 25-year warranty, parts and labour.
If your board is playing up, we find the cause first. We'll tell you straight if a repair will do the job or if an upgrade is the safer option, and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers mean an older board with little protection.
No RCDs, or only one covering part of the house.
Breakers or fuses that go when the kettle, air con or heater runs.
EV charger, ducted air con, induction cooktop or a pool pump on the way.
Lights dimming when appliances start can point to an overloaded board.
New circuits usually mean the board needs more room and protection.
An old board is a common flag on a building or electrical report.
Discoloured switches or a hot smell from the board. Call us now.
A breaker or safety switch that trips again straight away usually points to a fault on that circuit or an appliance on it. We find it and fix it.
Heat, buzzing or a burning smell from the board can mean a loose or failing connection. Call us straight away, 24/7.
If water has got into the meter box or a storm has damaged it, leave the power off and have it checked before it goes back on.
Worn or failed breakers and safety switches replaced and tested, so the protection works when you need it.
If you see smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 000.
Call 0478 014 622 or send a photo of your switchboard and what you want to add. That's usually enough to scope it.

Switchboard safety
Age thresholds and rules from the NSW Government and NSW Fair Trading.
The NSW Government says properties built during or after 2000 usually have safety switches installed. Older homes often don't.
NSW Fair Trading says a house built before 1977 is unlikely to have an earth rod. We check and fix earthing during a switchboard upgrade.
Safety switches turn off the power immediately if a fault is detected, protecting you from serious shock. Test them at least every six months.
The electrician who tests the work must submit a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work no later than seven days after testing.
The NSW Government says a safety switch only protects you if it's on that circuit, and each circuit should have its own. Older homes may have one protecting several circuits.
The NSW Government says a circuit breaker protects your wiring, while a safety switch protects people from severe electric shock. A safety switch has a test button with a label such as 30mA.
Where we work
Common signs are ceramic fuses, no safety switches, power that keeps tripping, lights that dim when appliances start, scorch marks, or plans to add an EV charger, air con or induction cooktop. Send us a photo of your board and we'll tell you.
It depends on the board. A faulty breaker, safety switch or loose connection can be fixed on its own. If the board has ceramic fuses, no safety switches or no spare room, an upgrade is usually the safer option. We explain what we find and give you a fixed price before any work starts.
If the board is smoking or sparking, or there’s a fire, keep away from it, get everyone out and call 000. If it’s only a smell and the board is safe to reach, turn off the main switch and call us on 0478 014 622, any time, day or night.
Most home switchboard upgrades are done in one visit, and the power is off for part of the day while we work. We'll tell you how long to expect before we start.
It depends on the size of the board, how many circuits you have and whether the mains or earthing need work. We give you a fixed price before we start, with no hidden fees.
Switchboards we install carry a 25-year warranty, covering parts and labour.
Often, yes. A charger is a big continuous load, so we check your board and supply first. If the board can't take it safely, we upgrade it as part of the job.
Yes. Every board we install has safety switches (RCDs) protecting the circuits, and we can add surge protection.
Yes. NSW electricians must submit a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) through Building Commission NSW’s eCert portal no later than seven days after completing the work, including the safety and compliance test. We lodge one for every job that needs it and send a copy to you.
Yes. We're accredited to work on the line from the pole and the meter, so if the service line, mains or meter need upgrading, we can do that as well.
