Signage rules
Exempt development rules for business signage from NSW Planning.
NSW Planning says the Advertising and Signage Exempt Development Code allows commonly used business signs as exempt development, no planning or building approval needed if the standards are met.
Illuminated signs on or within 50 m of a residential, rural or environmental protection zone can only be lit during the business's approved hours of operation, or between 7 am and 10 pm if no hours are set, under the exempt rules. A timer handles that for you.
Exempt illuminated signs must not have animation or moving or flashing images. Anything that flashes needs development approval.
Where we work
We travel all across Sydney for commercial and industrial work. We look after sites in Wetherill Park, Kemps Creek and the western industrial precincts, as well as Penrith, the Blue Mountains and the Hawkesbury.
No, our partner Neon Lanes designs and makes the sign. We handle installation: mounting, power, hardwiring, testing and timers.
Many business signs are exempt development if they meet the standards, for example size limits, no flashing, restricted hours near homes and written consent from the land owner. Signs on heritage items or outside the standards need approval. Check with your council if you're unsure.
If the sign is hardwired, yes. In NSW, any electrical wiring work must be done by or under the supervision of a licensed electrician.
